Schwing!

Wow! I mean seriously, wow! What a day! That Scott Pioli wasn’t lying about having some tricks up his sleeve. He said not to blink, and he was right! If your blink lasted 20 hours you’d miss our next pick. That guy don’t play!

Seriously, this was a very disappointing day. I’m trying not to overreact, but it looks like Scott Pioli was the recipient of a custom-fit clown suit courtesy of the rest of the NFL. He all but promised action, and he didn’t deliver. We made 1 pick and it was a serious reach. Tyson Jackson at #3? Seriously? I’ve got nothing against Jackson, but no way is that guy a #3 overall pick. I’d have been fine with him 10 picks later, but at #3 you gotta get a playmaker. Tyson Jackson isn’t that (4 sacks last year).

Why didn’t we just take Mark Sanchez? It was obvious teams wanted him. Even if they wouldn’t trade up to #3 to get him, they would’ve been forced to make us an offer if we actually drafted him. Sure there would’ve been some risk involved, but isn’t Scott Pioli supposed to be a bold trading genius? He sure didn’t look it today. He looked like a conservative, scared, first-time GM. Meanwhile teams like Cleveland and New England (surprise!) were making deals all day long. Cleveland’s Sanchez deal particularly made Pioli look out of his league. And Bill Belichick made all kinds of great deals while his protege sat there with his thumb up his ass. Not a good sign.

I really want to give Pioli the benefit of the doubt, but this fucking sucks. And its not even about Tyson Jackson. Its about attitude. I had my fill of unfounded, inexplicable arrogance from the last regime. If we get more of the same from these guys, they’ll have a serious enemy in Big Hatt. Believe you me, I’m gonna be all ears at Pioli’s post-draft press conference tomorrow. If he talks about how great they did and how happy they are, I’m going to be livid. If he admits he couldn’t get done exactly what he wanted, he’ll have earned my respect. It’s as simple as that. I’ve had enough of lies and bullshit grandstanding. I’d like to see decisive action backed up by accountability. Since the former is apparently too much to ask, I’ll settle for the latter. I’m not asking for much here.

Random draft thoughts:

1) I can’t believe my boi Rey fell that far. I’d heap praise on the Bungles for finally drafting him, but they used the #6 pick on Andre Smith. Swing-and-a-miss!

2) The Ravens have had a great draft thus far. No surprises there. Oher in the late first and Kruger in the late second? That’s 2 Big Hatt “do’s”, both later than they should’ve gone. The Ravens get my top score from day 1. I love Michael Oher and will be rooting for him. Call me a Mary, but I thought the emotion he showed after he finally got drafted was touching.

3) The Raiders, I mean Jesus Christ. Somebody needs to kill Al Davis already. Drafting a player because he has the best 40 time? Even Carl Peterson didn’t do that. How do the Raiders even have fans any more?

4) Currently taking suggestions for nicknames for the Dorsey/Jackson defensive end combo. I guess we only take LSU players in the first round now. We might as well go ahead and use our 3rd rounder on Ricky Jean-Francois so we can have a whole line full of LSU losers. Me and The Mask had a laugh-filled phone conversation about an hour ago where he was talking about how badass it is that our entire starting line (Tank, Dorsey, Jackson) are run-stuffers. We were really havin’ a laugh.

5) Kone-Dawg sent me a text earlier saying that if we managed to trade Dorset for a first rounder he, Sweetums and Katz were going to hold hands and jump off their balcony. I offered to pay their medical bills. Unfortunately, nobody wanted Dorsey. In an interview today Suzy Kolber asked Haley about Dorsey and he said something like, “we’re hoping he’ll be in better shape this year and can get stronger”. Not exactly a ringing endorsement. Had any team wanted Dorsey, we would’ve traded him. Aparently the rest of the NFL got their hands on that pesky game film from 2008. Nuts.

OK, I’m sick of this. I’m going out to ruin some hangs with my sour attitude. More thoughts tomorrow.

  1. Dorsey-Jackson= LSWho?

    Maybe that was too easy.

  2. more than once, when asked whether we were close to any trades, pioli said something to the effect of “the phone didn’t ring” or “you need someone who wants to trade with you”. to a certain extent, i understand the explanation. but this is a guy who has been hinting at draft-day moves since he got here. was the plan really to just sit by a phone, hoping that it rings? that’s absurd, especially when you consider the trades that went down throughout the nfl today.

to make matters worse, after selecting jackson #3 overall, pioli told the press not to “go anywhere”. give me a break. why say something like that? our draft party spent the next 2 hours clinging to false hope*. i would have taken a 7th rounder for dorsey. seriously i would have accepted a warm bag of poop for dorsey.

it’s obvious this was the worst case scenario for the chiefs, and yet press questions were met with front office arrogance. at the very least, we could have allowed the time to expire. katz pointed this out immediately after we picked. it would have been a weird move, but waiting could have saved us millions.

in short, i wouldn’t have such a problem with todays draft had it not been for all the talk leading up to it.

*our “draft party” consisted of three guys in a run down apartment listening to the draft on the radio and eating popeyes. we actually had no real hopes of acquiring another pick.

  3. The press conference was interesting. They apparently were considering Curry and Jackson, and picked Jackson because they thought they had a greater need at defensive end.

On the trading down, Pioli had a weak explanation. He said, “We didn’t receive any calls on trades once we got down near the end,” which of course means they received calls earlier and he did not generate anything out of the calls. He also said he was not calling anyone. He also somewhat lamely suggested that they were so happy getting Jackson that they were not motivated to seek a trade.

So with the Browns making a good trade that Pioli probably could have made, Pioli does look bad. He looked like a play it safe guy. He and Haley did not even sound like they thought Jackson was going to be a great player. Low expectations for a 3. We probably should have taken Curry. I doubt that taking Sanchez would have worked. He should have made the Jets think the Seahawks were going to take him, and squeezed the Jets for an even better deal than Cleveland got.

But remember, he did steal Cassell and the linebacker from Belicheck for a number 2, and we probably should consider that today.

He probably needs to pick Coffman tomorrow to get some good fan and press reaction, although that would mean they won’t make much use of the guy they picked last years.

  4. You can’t be making phone calls. Polie tride his best by maintaining his position of power and waiten for that phone to ring. He can’t be forcen no bait in peoples face. I’m mad as a hatter, but nothing I or Polie could of did.

    Chuck E.

  5. good call randy….er, chuck e…..you really nailed it.

some cool quotes about our new d tackle:

“He is more of a bull rusher than one coming off the edge”

Compares To: CLIFTON RYAN, St. Louis

“He is better taking on lead blockers and clogging the rush lanes than making hits in the open field”

“but pressuring the pocket is not really his forte”

  6. In the 4th round I want Ricky Jean-Francois. He’s a defensive tackle from LSU. It’s time to finish what we started.

  7. Why can’t you be making phone calls? I realize it reflects a desire to trade, but these are big boys and, regardless of who calls whom, if they are talking then they each know the other is interested.

In the Star today, they said Pioli offered the Lions the Chiefs’ number 3 and a 4th round pick for the Lioins’ 20th pick and round 2 pick. It did not say, but presumably Pioli called the Lions since they turned him down. The Lions probably should have taken the trade. They could have picked another offensive stud and achieved draft day thunder. And the Chiefs offer to the Lions was the type of offer that presumably would have been accepted by the Jets.

In any event, Pioli and Haley must really think the Chiefs’ D line stunk last year. The importance of the draft is overrated, but the Chiefs seem to be having a quiet one.

  8. I think the Chiefs D line stunk last year. Our draft wasn’t flashy like the Bingals (who scooped up Coffman and a decent late round DE) but the young depth along our line has to be considered strong to quite strong now. Some of these prospects among Jackson, Dorsey, Magee, Turk/Tank have to hit. 5 young guys fighting for 3 spots. I think Tamba is going to see a lot of time as our rush linebacker now. That’s good because it appears he was a liability in the run game.

  9. I’m surpirsed Pioli did not trade that 2010 second round pick from Atlanta to get someone like Coffman in the third round. Maybe a choice next year does not have much value on draft day. Since TG is likely to have a huge year and the Chiefs are likely to stink, Pioli better hit paydirt when he makes that pick next year.

  10. i lack the energy & resolve to deal with this right now. just wanted to drop in and say i am currently in the market for a half-LSU half-Chiefies jersey

  11. for identification purposes, i propose we separate our d line into two groups: the Cloggerz and the Sackerz. guys like tank, jackson and magee clog the lanes while players like hali and turk pile on the sacks. i’m going to design a poster for each group with some kind of storm in the background. dorsey will likely be featured in both posters.

in all seriousness, i’ve had some time to think about our draft and i’ve decided that i’m ok with it. it’s hard to live with the fact that we’ve wasted a lot of high picks on d-linemen in recent years, but we did. this weekend we had to make selections based on what our team looks like today, regardless of draft history. pioli and haley recognized that our defensive line was a joke, and drafted accordingly.

  12. i’d like to hear how jackson compares to this rookie of the year piolo drafted for the pats – wasn’t he an end?

what are the details of the cassel deal?

i’ll be curious to see how much more Jackson gets paid than Curry. there can be no arguing that’s wasted money. unless letting your time run out is somehow no longer collusionally allowed though remains within the actual rules. or, if they knew they were taking him, if anyone, with that 3rd pick, they should’ve had a deal going in. surely the agent can see that if we don’t take him at 3, he’s not going for a good 10 more picks and agree to a more fair deal in exchange for a guarantee pick at 3. Deal or No Deal – DEAL!

Pioli did mention they worked really hard. not only did they have to be prepared for whomever the first two might pick and able to react, they also had to know the possible middle-round guys in case of a trade. and by in case of a trade, i don’t think he meant he FAILED to get a deal done. just that our second-favorite scenario didn’t work and oh-well we got stuck with our first favorite.

i don’t know if cassel/vrabel remains a steal, there, oracle. i know i was initially in favor of it. but i know even more confidently i’d be a lot more excited right now if we’d drafted some kid in the 2nd and didn’t have cassel & vrabel on our team. – will someone give me the name of someone exciting we could have drafted with that 2nd rounder so i can spend the next several years coveting him?

(i’d like to think i’m not actually anti-cassel/vrabel. hopefully i’m just overlybored by them due to the excitement of the draft. but i don’t think cassel is such a necessary upgrade over thiggy. and i fear vrabel will cut into speedwagon’s time. i – what am i saying – the entire Stickybun’s Speedwagon Support Skwad is rather PO’d at the disrespect being shown to Speedwagon, the Forgotten Chiefie. i haven’t seen an overlyhyped mediocre player expected to make the dramatic leap to goodness or serviceableness like this since James “Sideline-to-Sideline” Reed*)

*responded by taking a dramatic step back

  13. Loved Whitlock’s article regarding Herm’s commentary on ESPN. Everytime I saw Herm on screen, I wanted to fake punch him.

  14. I just spent 3 hours doing a draft overview and the computer froze when i hit publish. Unbelievably pissed off right now. I’m blaming this one on Herm Edwards.
